The Complete Walt Disney World Planning Guide (updated for 2026 - 27)
Magic Kingdom Park 50th Anniversary - 2021
Get ready to dive into the ultimate planning adventure! This guide is designed for first-time visitors to Walt Disney World, but it's also a great refresher if you haven't visited in a few years or if another Disney destination is your home park.
Planning a Disney vacation can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. My goal is to help you understand how Walt Disney World works so you can build a vacation that fits your family, not someone else's itinerary.
This guide will continue to evolve as Disney changes, and throughout it you'll find links to other blogs where I dive deeper into many of the topics covered here.
A little about me: Walt Disney World has been my happy place since I was seven years old. As a mom of four, I've experienced Disney through every stage of childhood, from babies to teens. After over 30 years of visiting, I've learned one thing: the best Disney vacations aren't the ones where you do everything. They're the ones where your family actually enjoys the experience.
So don't let the length of this guide intimidate you. You don't have to read it all at once. Bookmark it, come back to it as you plan, and let it be your roadmap to a less stressful Disney vacation.
Hate Research? Start Here.
I promise that even though this guide is long, it is not overwhelming because I break everything down step-by-step. However, if research is not your thing and you are thinking, “I do not even want to do all of that,” I also have one-day park guides available that tell you exactly what to do and what to book.
These guides are especially helpful for guests staying off property who do not receive as many early-booking advantages. If you are staying at a Disney Resort, you will have additional advantages, but the guides can still help you plan and execute a wonderful park day.
Whether you love researching or want someone to simply tell you what to do, every family needs to know when their important Disney World booking windows open.
Use the Disney World Booking Window Calculator below by entering your check-in date and selecting where you are staying. The calculator will give you the important dates for booking your dining reservations, Enchanting Extras, and Lightning Lane selections.
Let's get started!
Here Is the Truth...
You are not going to do everything in one trip.
There is absolutely no way.
Trust me, after more than 30 years of visiting Walt Disney World, I have never had two trips that looked exactly the same.
Before you even step foot in the parks, let go of the idea that you have to see it all. That one mindset shift will save you more stress than any planning tip I can give you. Plan your vacation around your family's interests, not a FOMO-fueled checklist of what everyone else says you "have to do."
My Disney trips have changed over the years, too. We don't spend every minute in the parks anymore. We explore resorts, try new restaurants, enjoy Disney Springs, and add a few new experiences each trip. That's one of the best things about Walt Disney World. Every vacation can look completely different.
For a little perspective, Walt Disney World welcomes millions of guests each year and spans roughly 25,000 acres, almost the size of San Francisco or twice the size of Manhattan. Between four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs, more than 25 Disney Resort hotels, golf courses, miniature golf, and countless dining and entertainment options, there is simply no way to experience everything in one vacation.
If you'd like a better understanding of what each park has to offer, be sure to read my Disney Parks Overview before deciding what belongs on your family's must-do list.
If you're tempted to build a color-coded itinerary from rope drop until park close, don't. Leave room for flexibility, unexpected moments, and simply enjoying the day. The goal isn't to check every box. It's to create the kind of Disney vacation your family will remember long after you get home.
Did I choose the right Disney vacation?
If you're here, you've already made one of the biggest decisions: you're going to Walt Disney World!
While Disneyland and Disney Cruise Line are both incredible vacations, Walt Disney World offers the most to see, do, and experience. That's also what makes it the most overwhelming to plan, but don't worry, that's exactly why this guide exists.
I've vacationed at Disneyland, and now that we've become a Disney Cruise Line family, I can honestly say every Disney destination has something special to offer. Disneyland is smaller and easier to navigate, while Disney Cruise Line gives you all the Disney magic at a much slower, more relaxing pace, especially if you're traveling with young children.
But if you're looking for the ultimate Disney vacation, Walt Disney World is hard to beat. Four theme parks, incredible resorts, world-class dining, water parks, golf, shopping, entertainment, and hundreds of ways to customize your trip mean no two vacations ever look exactly alike.

How to Use This Guide
Think of this guide as your Walt Disney World planning hub. Each section gives you an overview of a planning topic, with links to more in-depth blogs where you can dive deeper when you need to. Whether you're choosing a resort, deciding on Character Dining, or learning how Lightning Lane works, you'll find everything organized in one place.
You don't have to read this guide from start to finish in one sitting. Bookmark it, come back to it as you plan, and use it as a reference throughout your vacation planning journey.
Planning a Walt Disney World vacation takes time, but that's true of any dream vacation. The more you understand before you arrive, the less time you'll spend feeling overwhelmed in the parks and the more time you'll spend making memories.
If you're not already following me on Instagram, come join our community! Every Monday, I host a Disney vacation Q&A where you can ask questions about your upcoming trip. And if you have a question while you're reading this guide, leave it in the comments. If you're wondering, there's a good chance someone else is too.
Now let's start planning your Walt Disney World vacation!
Who are you going with?
One of the biggest factors in planning a successful Disney vacation isn't just where you're staying or which parks you're visiting. It's understanding the people you're traveling with.
I've planned just about every type of Disney vacation imaginable: solo trips, couples getaways, family vacations, multigenerational trips, vacations with multiple families, and large group trips with friends. Every group travels differently, and what works for one family may be a disaster for another.
Before you keep planning, take a few minutes to complete my Disney Vacation Planning Style Quiz. It will help you identify your planning style, understand how it affects the rest of your group, and give you a better idea of the type of Disney vacation that will fit everyone best. If you're the one organizing the trip, this is one of the most valuable steps you can take before making any major planning decisions.
Once you know your group's travel style, the rest of this guide will make a whole lot more sense.

The workbook is completely free through my email list, or you can purchase it if you'd rather not subscribe.
My goal has always been to make Disney planning easier and less stressful. I hope this workbook helps you spend less time organizing and more time looking forward to your vacation.
What's New at Walt Disney World (Updated July 2026)
One thing you should know about planning a Walt Disney World vacation is that Disney is always changing. New attractions open, older favorites close for refurbishment, and sometimes rumors spread faster than the official announcements. My goal is to keep this section updated so you can plan with confidence using the most current information available.
Disney's Animal Kingdom
Now Open
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! has replaced It's Tough to Be a Bug inside the Tree of Life.
Under Construction
Tropical Americas (Pueblo Esperanza) is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2027.
This new land will include an Encanto attraction inside Casita Madrigal, an Indiana Jones attraction replacing DINOSAUR, a carousel, dining, and shopping.
EPCOT
Now Open
Test Track has officially reopened with a reimagined experience inspired by the original World of Motion.
GEO-82, EPCOT's new adults-only lounge inside Spaceship Earth, is now open.
Magic Kingdom
Now Open
Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away is lighting up Magic Kingdom with its brand-new nighttime parade.
The Beak and Barrel, the new Pirates of the Caribbean-themed tavern, is now welcoming guests.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has officially reopened following its extensive refurbishment. Disney added beautiful new effects while keeping everything fans love about the attraction. In my opinion, they absolutely nailed this update.
Under Construction
Work continues on the future Villains Land expansion.
Construction is also underway on Piston Peak National Park, the new Cars-inspired area replacing parts of Frontierland.
Disney's Hollywood Studios
Now Open
The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure has returned with an all-new production.
Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After is now entertaining guests.
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run now features a brand-new mission starring The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially opened on May 26, 2026. Disney kept the thrills while giving the attraction an entirely new story, music, and plenty of Muppet humor. It's quickly become one of my favorite updates.
Under Construction
A brand-new Monsters, Inc. land is on the way and will include Disney's first suspended roller coaster.
A Quick Planning Tip
If you come across another planning guide or social media post that says Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is under refurbishment, or Smugglers Run hasn't been updated yet, double-check the publication date. Disney changes quickly, and older articles can become outdated fast.
The good news? That's one of the reasons I continue updating this guide. My goal is to help you spend less time sorting through conflicting information and more time planning an unforgettable Walt Disney World vacation.
Get Excited for disney world
One of the best ways to make your Disney vacation even more magical is to know what you're walking into before you arrive. If your kids aren't already obsessed with Disney movies and characters, don't worry! I've put together a watchlist for each park, plus an overall Walt Disney World watchlist, so you can become familiar with the stories and characters you'll actually see during your trip.
Now, I know you're probably not going to watch every single movie, and that's completely okay! Think of these lists as a guide to help you recognize the Disney IP (intellectual property) you'll encounter most often throughout the parks. One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make is assuming every Disney character is at Walt Disney World. For example, I can't tell you how many people expect to meet Spider-Man. Sorry...you'll have to head to Disneyland in California for that one because Walt Disney World doesn't have the rights to use him.
Even if you don't watch every movie, these watchlists will help you discover where your favorite stories and characters are located, making it easier to decide which parks, attractions, and experiences your family will enjoy the most.
Setting Up Your Disney Vacation Framework
Now that we've covered the basics, it's time to start building your vacation plan.
Think of this section as the foundation for everything that follows. Before you book dining reservations, choose Lightning Lanes, or start mapping out park days, you need a few key decisions in place. Those choices will make the rest of your planning much easier.
What I Recommend
The biggest mistake I see families make is trying to do too much. Walt Disney World is a marathon, not a sprint.
No matter what your itinerary looks like, build in time to rest, even if it's just a slower morning, an afternoon by the pool, or a break back at your resort. If you're visiting for four days, I recommend two park days, a rest day, and then your final park day. Your feet, your kids, and honestly your entire family will enjoy the vacation so much more.
If you're visiting for the first time, I generally recommend staying 5 to 7 days if your schedule and budget allow. That gives you enough time to experience the parks without feeling like you're racing from one attraction to the next.
Your Mission
As you work through the next few sections, focus on answering these questions:
When do you want to visit?
How many days can you spend at Walt Disney World?
What is your vacation budget?
Which parks are your biggest priorities?
Are there specific characters, attractions, or franchises your family loves?
Once you have those answers, the rest of your Disney planning becomes much easier.

Setting Your Disney Budget
Let's talk about the least magical part of planning...the budget.
A Walt Disney World vacation can fit a wide range of budgets, but having a plan before you start booking will make every decision easier. Between resort hotels, park tickets, dining, souvenirs, Lightning Lane, and transportation, the costs can add up quickly if you aren't paying attention.
The good news is that you don't have to do everything to have an incredible vacation. Setting a realistic budget upfront helps you prioritize what matters most to your family and prevents those "How did we spend that much?" moments after you get home.
Your Mission
Set your Disney vacation budget and then add 10% for unexpected expenses. Whether it's an extra snack, a souvenir you didn't plan on buying, or a last-minute experience, having a little cushion will make your trip much less stressful.

Disney Planning Timeline
One of the biggest advantages you can give yourself is time.
Many parts of a Walt Disney World vacation, like resort reservations, dining, special events, and certain experiences, have booking windows. Understanding when those windows open helps you avoid unnecessary stress and gives you the best chance of getting the reservations you want.
The good news? You don't have to memorize every deadline. I've put together a planning timeline so you know exactly what to do and when to do it.
Your Mission
Take a few minutes to review the Disney Planning Timeline and compare it to your upcoming vacation. Make sure you haven't missed any important booking windows before moving on to the next step.
Mission: Take a quick look at any past timelines to make sure you haven’t missed a step.

Planning for Large Groups, Multigenerational Trips, and Multiple Families
Planning a Walt Disney World vacation for a larger group is a completely different experience than planning for your own family. Different budgets, ages, interests, and energy levels can make even simple decisions feel complicated.
Before you start planning, I recommend taking my two quizzes: What's Your Disney Vacation Style? and What Type of Disney Planner Are You? Understanding your vacation style and planning personality can help you recognize where your priorities may differ from the rest of your group, especially if you're the one leading the planning.
Once you've taken the quizzes, explore the resources below. Whether you're traveling with grandparents, multiple families, or a large group of friends, these guides will help you navigate group dynamics, set realistic expectations, and create a vacation everyone can enjoy.
Your Mission
Take both quizzes, then read the planning guides that best fit your travel group before moving on to the next section.

Where to Stay: Disney Resorts vs. Off-Property Options
Where you stay can have a huge impact on your Walt Disney World vacation. Disney Resort hotels offer perks like Early Theme Park Entry, complimentary transportation, and the convenience of staying in the middle of the magic. Off-property hotels and vacation rentals can offer more space or lower prices, depending on your family's needs.
There isn't one right answer. The best choice depends on your budget, travel style, and priorities.
What I Recommend
If it fits your budget, I almost always recommend staying at a Disney Resort hotel. You might be surprised to find that Disney's Value Resorts are sometimes priced competitively with nearby off-property hotels, especially when you factor in parking, transportation, and the time you'll save getting around.
That said, every family is different. If you need multiple bedrooms, a full kitchen, or extra living space, an Airbnb or off-property vacation home may be the better fit. We've done both over the years, and there are situations where staying off-property makes perfect sense.
Your Mission
Decide where you'll be staying and make your reservation. If you're planning to have groceries delivered, write down your grocery order date in your planning workbook so you don't forget it later.

Understanding Disney Tickets and Special Passes
Choosing the right tickets is one of the biggest planning decisions you'll make. Between standard tickets, Park Hopper, Annual Passes, military tickets, water park options, and special event tickets, it can feel like there's a lot to sort through.
The good news is that not every ticket is right for every family. The best choice depends on your budget, the number of days you're visiting, and what you hope to accomplish during your trip.
What I Recommend
Before purchasing tickets, think about the type of vacation you want to have. Are you planning to spend full days in the parks, or would you rather move at a slower pace? Will your family actually use Park Hopper, or would you be happier focusing on one park each day?
I'm also a big fan of Disney After Hours events for the right family. They can be a great alternative to an additional park day thanks to lower crowds and cooler evening temperatures. Just don't try to pair an After Hours event with a full park day. Trust me, everyone will enjoy the experience a lot more if you save your energy for one or the other.
Your Mission
Decide which ticket type best fits your family's vacation goals, then purchase your tickets. If you're considering Park Hopper, After Hours events, or any special ticketed experiences, make sure they fit both your budget and your family's touring style.

Dining at Disney: Reservations, Character Dining, and Snack Spots
Dining is more than just a meal at Walt Disney World. It can be a chance to slow down, escape the heat, meet favorite characters, or experience some of the best themed restaurants Disney has to offer.
Whether you're planning a signature dinner, a quick-service lunch, or you're on the hunt for the best snacks, having a plan ahead of time will save you time, money, and a whole lot of stress.
What I Recommend
Think about what matters most to your family when it comes to dining. I love using character meals as built-in breaks because you can meet several characters while enjoying a meal instead of waiting in multiple character lines. Just remember that character dining is about the experience first and the food second, so always check the menu before booking.
I also recommend choosing a few table service restaurants that you're excited about, finding a couple of quick-service locations in each park, and making a list of any must-try snacks. You don't have to eat everywhere. In fact, having a few favorites picked out ahead of time usually makes the day much less overwhelming.
Your Mission
Create a dining wish list. Decide which table service restaurants, character meals, quick-service locations, and snacks are most important to your family. Review the menus, narrow down your favorites, and be ready to book dining reservations when your booking window opens.

Lightning Lane Tips
Lightning Lane is one of the best tools for reducing your wait times at Walt Disney World, but only if you know how to use it. Whether you're new to Lightning Lane or just need a refresher, this section will walk you through the strategies that can help you spend more time enjoying attractions and less time standing in line.
From booking strategies like "Tap and Burn" and "Tap, Modify, Book" to deciding whether Lightning Lane is even worth it for your family, you'll learn how to make the most of the system. A good Lightning Lane strategy can mean the difference between spending two hours in line or eight.

Disney Vacation Extras: MagicBands, Transportation & More
It's often the little details that make a Disney vacation feel effortless. MagicBands, Disney transportation, grocery delivery, PhotoPass, Memory Maker, stroller rentals, package delivery, and other optional extras can save you time, reduce stress, and make your trip even more enjoyable.
Not every extra is worth it for every family, so this section will help you decide what's worth your money and what's easy to skip based on your vacation style.
What I Recommend
Don't assume you need every Disney add-on. Focus on the extras that will make your vacation easier for your family. For us, MagicBands, Disney transportation, and Memory Maker are almost always worth it, while other extras depend on the type of trip we're taking.
Your Mission
Review the optional Disney extras and decide which ones fit your family's needs and budget. Add any purchases or reservations to your planning workbook so nothing gets overlooked before your trip.

What I Recommend
